Another indoor team
Got invited to play on another indoor team. Well, invited to play on one team and then sloughed off to the opposing team, but invited nonetheless. Played with a former teammate against 3 other teammates (with a roster of about 19 players - most of which were high school ballers). Needless to say, we were out gunned and they ran players at us all night (we had 3 subs of non-high school age) so we took a loss. But, not as bad as it would look on paper. 10-4 so we didn't get shut out. I actually had a goal and their keep stopped 2 more of my shots. We have some talent. We just need to some more time on the pitch and non-stacked roster. It was still fun and there is potential. More as the season progresses...

Random musings
My oldest had his second "try out" practice for 1st team and was still sore from the practice on Monday. He was in a more defensive position for the 1st half and it wasn't great. He was moved into a striker position for the second half and seemed to find his stride. At the close of practice, the coach was not convinced so we have one more shot this Friday. I am expecting him to dig deep and close out strong. I'm not yet sure he's decided to go all in and do the work. And make no mistake about it, this will be a season of work. To be continued...
Another pick up game on Monday. Always fun to have a short sided game in 85+ degree weather in 10000% humidity. Weather aside, it was a good game. 7v7, old guys (myself included) vs young guys. In playing a fair amount of pick up, I've noticed a trend. Young teams push, run and score early. But often it is a "twice as hot for half as long" scenario. The young team bounced out to a 3-0 run early. However, we slowly clawed it to a 3-3 tie. The lead changed a couple more times until 5-5 then the wheels fell off for the young team. By the time I called it a game (about 1:10min) it was 9-5 old guys. It's a funny game...

Vaca week
Vacation week so not a ton going on. Beach, boat, island, beer, repeat... So, I've been off the pitch for a while. Kicked the ball around with my oldest (on the worlds crappiest field - weeds, mildewed or mossed net, 4,000 fire ant mounds, and about a 1/2 mile from the sun - you get the idea). The interesting news is there is an opportunity for my oldest to get on the 1st team for the club he plays. One of the kids I coached in my son's parks and rec league actually referred my oldest to the coach for a tryout. (He was a great player even at 6). He has an on field "try out" on Monday and is both excited and nervous. I told him to just play like he knows how to play and play like he wants to be there. I am more interested in him being on the 1st team because he will play full 11v11 soccer for the 1st time in a game setting. We shall see how it goes but I'm looking forward to the next entry...
